Goldrise

A slow gold dawn on hemp, and on the reverse, blue upon blue from edge to raw edge. The whole piece is one event taking its time. Gold enters at the lower edge and works upward through the jute without hurry, and because the fiber is porous it arrives on the far side too, slightly altered, the way the same morning looks different from another window. Shibumi: nothing is added for effect, and the restraint is the point. On the blue face there is no second color to argue with, so the eye starts reading the weave itself: where the ink pooled, where the hemp drank it, where the studio floor left a mark. Two faces, one cloth, each painting the other through the weave.
